01
What Instagram changed
Instagram is renaming its existing AI creator profile disclosure to AI-generated profile and says profiles featuring an AI-generated person can have recommendation reach limited when they fail to disclose that identity.
- Creators who proactively apply the profile label are not penalized merely for disclosing a synthetic person.
- The platform has not published a universal reach-reduction percentage.
- Recommendation surfaces such as Reels and Explore are the distribution areas highlighted in current reporting.
02
Who the profile label is for
The rule targets the identity represented by the profile: an AI influencer, virtual model, synthetic spokesperson or fictional human-looking creator. It is not a blanket label for every account that uses AI somewhere in production.
- A real creator using AI to edit photos does not become an AI-generated profile.
- AI-assisted captions, graphics or ideation alone do not trigger this profile-level disclosure.
- Individual media can still have separate AI information labels.
03
What limited reach does and does not mean
Instagram has not disclosed a fixed penalty, detection method or universal enforcement timestamp. The safe claim is narrower: undisclosed synthetic-person profiles can lose recommendation visibility, while correct proactive disclosure avoids a penalty solely for failing to label the profile.
- Do not diagnose a policy penalty from one weak Reel.
- Use Account Status and recommendation eligibility when available.
- Track non-follower reach before and after any explicit enforcement notice.
04
What creators, agencies and brands should do
Treat disclosure as part of the account architecture for genuine AI-persona profiles. For real humans using AI-assisted workflows, do not apply a profile-level synthetic identity label unnecessarily.
- Document which accounts are built around synthetic people.
- Keep media-level disclosures accurate separately.
- Avoid presenting a synthetic persona as a real employee or founder.
- Monitor Account Status and recommendation reach after rollout changes.
